1Eleven

Private developers redefine student living

Student living doesn’t get much ritzier than at 1Eleven.

The lobby offers a café and restaurant lounge with brick walls, artsy decor and colourful furniture. There’s a generously equipped gym, a quiet study room surrounded by hand-painted wall art and kitchens with multiple ovens, sinks and dining tables. The average room is decked out with a bed, couch, mini-fridge, microwave, sink, flat-screen TV and a view of downtown Ottawa.

For those who spent their latter years of university in a rundown converted house with half a classroom’s worth of roommates, this isn’t your average student living situation. Amid a large student housing market — both the University of Ottawa and Carleton University have waiting lists for on-campus residence — private development companies are putting forward new answers to landlocked campuses and climbing enrollment in Ottawa.
